As you likely read in our previous letter, 2020 will be one of the most important years in Wisconsin state history in the fight for the Second Amendment — with an all-out war coming in Madison and the critical 2020 primary and general elections.
The Wisconsin Firearms Coalition has two primary goals for the upcoming legislative session.
First, we intend to hold the line on the onslaught of gun control bills that are being pushed by Governor Evers, AG Kaul, and over fifty lawmakers in Madison.
The primary threat facing us is ‘Red Flag Gun Seizure’ Legislation (A.B. 573.)
As you may already know, this legislation would allow virtually anyone who doesn’t like you — from a bitter ex-spouse looking for revenge to an angry liberal aunt who lives 1,000 miles away — to tell the authorities that you ‘might be dangerous.’
Once this complaint is filed, a liberal judge would then hold a secret, ‘ex-parte’ hearing that you would not even know about, much less be allowed to attend.
In most cases, the evidence that can be used against you could be as simple as the recent purchase of a firearm or ammunition!
If the judge agrees with the complaint, your firearms would be seized before you’ve been arrested, charged, indicted, or convicted of ANYTHING!
While you would have the ability to challenge this seizure order a year later, that would be incredibly expensive and given the state of the judiciary in this state, you are unlikely to be given your firearms back.
But as dangerous as this bill is from a policy standpoint, it’s even more dangerous when you consider the political backdrop, as this bill has growing support from Republicans!
In fact, in a growing number of states, Republicans are leading the charge for this due-process shredding legislation. Consider a few examples:
In Michigan, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey has relented under the pressure of gun grabbers and liberal media, and has agreed to hold public hearings on this bill this fall.
In Iowa, Republican House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl was all over the news recently, telling liberal news outlets that he was open to ramming ‘Red Flags’ into law in ‘red’ Iowa!
And in Pennsylvania, Democratic Governor Tom Wolf was ecstatic when Republican State Senator Tom Killion agreed to be the lead sponsor for ‘Red Flag Gun Seizures’ in the Senate for 2019 –- making it far easier to pass the bill in a legislature that is controlled by Republicans.
So it’s clear that just because the Wisconsin legislature has Republican majorities in both chambers, doesn’t mean that we can ignore this threat — not for a second!
But this is not the only threat that we are facing.
You see, Senator Lena Taylor and Assemblywoman Melissa Sargent are going to be making a major push for their ‘Universal Background Check’ legislation next session.
This legislation A.B. 431 would do absolutely nothing to stop committed criminals, but that’s not what it was intended to do. Rather, this legislation would create a massive database of every gun owner in the state of Wisconsin!
Please understand exactly what is at stake for gun owners like you and me if this legislation passes into law.
If you want to pass down a family heirloom firearm to your nephew or cousin, you would have to go through a government mandated check first — or you would become a CONVICTED CRIMINAL!
If you wanted to swap some of your firearms collection with a friend that you’ve known for your entire life (something that many gun owners do,) you would have to go through a government mandated check first — or you would become a CONVICTED CRIMINAL!
And if you and some friends went on a hunting trip over the weekend, and you loaned a lifelong buddy a shotgun without first going through a government mandated check — you would become a CONVICTED CRIMINAL!
Trust me, Governor Evers and his liberal socialists in Madison are going ‘all in’ on this bill. In fact, when this bill was filed just weeks ago, it already had a whopping FIFTY cosponsors.

But I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this legislation is about much more than just stamping out our gun rights — it’s an attack on our heritage of freedom that makes this country unique to the entire world!
You see, next to my bb gun, my first firearm was a .410 single-shot shotgun given to me by my grandfather. He taught me how to shoot it out behind his grain bins on his farm in Northern Iowa.
And while I’ve bought more expensive and more exotic firearms since that time, it’s still the most treasured firearm that I own because it was a gift from my grandfather.
If Assemblywoman Sergent and Senator Taylor have their way, my grandfather — and probably your grandfather — would have faced felony charges for giving me that .410!
That’s what I mean when I say that the fight we are engaged in is about more than just our Second Amendment rights.
If we lose our right to defend ourselves, our country will be headed to tyranny and socialism in the blink of an eye, which is the clear goal of people like Governor Evers, Senator Lena Taylor, and Assemblywoman Sargent, who hate our country!

But as important as it is that we gear up for a major legislative fight, we also need to ensure that WIFC is in a position to run the biggest election program possible during the 2020 primary and general elections.
It’s simple. If anti-gun lawmakers don’t pay a price at the ballot box for their actions, they will just keep coming at us again and again.
So the Wisconsin Firearms Coalition simply MUST be prepared to run a monster election program in 2020, exposing as many gun-grabbers as we can in targeted districts, sending a message that if you mess with our gun rights, you WILL pay a price.
And we are not going to waste your resources in ‘blue’ strongholds like Madison, Waunakee, or Mt. Horeb.
No, we are going to get to work in areas where your resources can have the maximum impact. Some of these areas may include places like:
>>> Assembly District 14; where State Representative Robyn Vining desperately hopes that gun owners forget about her support of ‘Red Flag Gun Seizure’ legislation. Afterall, she won her election by 138 votes last year!
>>> Senate District 30; where State Senator Dave Hansen won with just 51% of the vote in 2016 and is terrified that his support for gun control may cost him his job, especially during a Presidential election year!
>>> Senate District 32; where State Senator Jenn Shilling won her last election by 56 votes! No, that’s not a typo, Shilling only garnered 49% of the vote, in a race where WIFC has identified over 1,700 gun owners who support the Second Amendment!
But everything we do in 2020 — from our legislative battles to our election season programs — are only going to be possible if you continue to stand with us by renewing your membership!

I know that’s a lot, but as you’ve just read, we are facing one of the most critical years in our history in our fight to protect the Second Amendment.
Our forefathers paid a terrible price to rescue our young nation from the tyranny of England, and to build the greatest country that the world has ever known.
Fundamental to that was the idea that free men must always be able to keep and bear arms, as that was the ultimate check on the tyranny that they had just escaped.
Governor Evers, Senator Lena Taylor, and Assemblywoman Sergent want to destroy our right to keep and bear arms as part of their larger goal of turning this great nation into just another socialist nightmare.
It’s up to you and me to stop them!
As the father of two little boys (and one on the way!), I know that what you and I do here in Wisconsin over the next few months may very well be what it takes to keep our great state from becoming the next anti-gun stronghold.
But we must fight as hard as we can.
